Imbued with History

The Sable Collective presents “The OG Collection” featuring Harriet Tubman, Josephine Baker, and Eartha Kitt. These are black women of our past who have bravely trail blazed a path for us to collectively continue on today

FOR OUR ANCESTORS

In each image series, we re-imagine our leading sisters in present-day styling as a way of not only paying our respect but connecting ourselves to them more closely and remembering their legacies are still relevant today.

We consider Harriet Tubman to be a manifestation of courage. Born a slave, she died a free woman. She led herself and many other slaves to freedom by seeking shelter in her both her faith and resistance system of the Under Ground Railroad.

JOSEPHINE BAKER

Josephine Baker spent her youth in poverty before learning to dance and finding success on Broadway. In the 1920s she moved to France and soon became one of Europe’s most popular and highest-paid performers.

Josephine Baker

Born Freda Josephine McDonald on June 3, 1906, in St. Louis, Missouri, Josephine Baker spent her youth in poverty before learning to dance and finding success on Broadway. In the 1920s she moved to France and soon became one of Europe’s most popular and highest-paid performers. She worked for the French Resistance during World War II, and during the 1950s and ’60s devoted herself to fighting segregation and racism in the United States. After beginning her comeback to the stage in 1973, Josephine Baker died of a cerebral hemorrhage on April 12, 1975, and was buried with military honors.

Harriet Tubman

We consider Harriet Tubman to be a manifestation of courage. Born a slave, she died a free woman. She led herself and many other slaves to freedom by seeking shelter in her both her faith and resistance system of the Under Ground Railroad. She is our hero and continues to lead the way. She continues to inspire us to be faithful and be prepared. She teaches us how to become quiet storms which disrupt and reshape what we know as possible. We carry her strength forward. We carry her sense of responsibility forward. We carry her love forward. We promise to never stop moving forward. Thank you to our Moses.
